One Dish of Chili, A Shocking Tale of Human Greed

The film explores human relationships, the complexities of human nature, and business ethics in a harbor town through two contrasting hotpot restaurants: Dajiang Hotpot (大江火锅店), owned by husband and wife Derek Lin and Brenda Zhou, and Wang's Hotpot (旺哥火锅店), run by the honest and straightforward Victor Sun. The story begins on a cold, stormy night when Captain Marcus Chen and his fishing crew finally return to shore after surviving a fierce storm. Seeking warmth and a comforting meal, they visit Dajiang Hotpot, owned by his longtime friend Derek Lin. However, when the crew members simply ask for three extra plates of chili peppers, the restaurant owner Brenda Zhou responds with harsh insults. Meanwhile, Derek Lin reveals his petty and calculating nature, keeping track of every spoonful of chili and every kettle of hot water over the past five years. He has completely forgotten how Captain Chen once helped save his struggling restaurant by bringing his entire fishing crew to support the business when it first opened. A simple request for an extra plate of chili peppers exposes the true nature of human relationships. Disappointed by his friend's ingratitude, Captain Chen pays the full 160 yuan for the extra condiments and leads his entire crew to Wang's Hotpot instead. Unlike Derek Lin, Victor Sun is an honest businessman who believes in fairness and integrity. His prices are clearly displayed, and he always uses fresh, high-quality ingredients prepared daily. Through the contrast between these two restaurant owners, the film delivers a powerful message about gratitude, human nature, integrity, and the true meaning of doing business. Sometimes, a small plate of chili peppers is enough to reveal who people really are.
